“A lot of people are saying …”

Here’s the bullshit of the #fakenews and FAKE NEWS MEDIA! movement—in a  nutshell.

Earlier today Donald Trump was asked whether he believed someone was funding the non-caravan caravan.

“I don’t know who, but I wouldn’t be surprised,” he said. “A lot of people say yes.”

And what I would like to know—really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, know—is who are these “a lot of people.” Because Trump cites them all the fucking time. A lot of people say this, a lot of people say that, a lot of people believe this, a lot of people believe that. But, with rare exception, he never tells us who, exactly, the “a lot of people are.”

Why? Because they don’t exist.

They’re phantoms.

Invisible invisibles.

Fake people.

Fake news.

Let’s not forget that this guy created a fake persona so he could pose as “Donald Trump’s publicist.” Maybe he, himself, is that “lot of people.”

Once again, Jeff Pearlman has produced an exhaustively researched, elegantly written book that re-creates one of the most colorful and memorable teams of the modern era. No basketball fan's bookshelf will be complete without it.
